About: Joyce Bettencourt is the co-founder and Creative Director of The Vesuvius Group, LLC (thevesuviusgroup.com). The Vesuvius Group is a collective of idea conceptualizers and techy-creatives working together online and within virtual worlds such as Second Life, on collaborative projects that try to make a difference within the world at large.
Her prior professional experience is as a visual artist and designer who has been involved in everything from corporate branding campaigns to collaborative street art performances. Her artwork has been shown in the United States, Australia and online through virtual exhibitions.
She is a proponent of all things internet social media and believes in it's power to foster community and collaboration through online mediums such as blogging, podcasting, video/machinima and virtual worlds and has used mash ups of all of these to create provocative art installations.
Joyce is also the web 2.0 specialist for Global Kids, which runs online digital media initiatives to prepare urban youth in becoming global citizens and community leaders. They have a presence in the online virtual world Second Life, where they use Teen Second Life as a tool for education, game development and issue advocacy, and where they partner with outside organizations such as UNICEF and the U.S. Holocaust Museum to bring their work to teens.

John Cusack: Real Shock and Awe
The world looked to America... we showed our best. The planet sighs in relief and deserves a righteous party. We have beaten back the worst in ourselves; the old and inevitable forces of cynicism and greed. No more patriotic primates to rule the roost. Real change will take sacrifice, vigilance and will.
John Cusack: No Currency Left to Buy the Big Lies
Brace yourselves free marketers: the quality of economic and human transactions will have to take priority over money. Faith and hope have to manifest in the social transactions we make. A new social contract could be coming based on a real currency my friend Kevin McCabe calls the currency of grace. It is a currency of economic fairness and institutionalizing concepts of shared responsibility; a currency based on the gold standard that every human has value and should be awarded respect and opportunity, the dignity that comes from human beings protecting each other from the values and ideals of a Darwinist world. Its spirit is in Keynesian economics, a mixed economy with regulated markets and social spending. In the new era, we must remove fundamentalist right wing economists as the high priests and kings. Their ideology will stay dead only if we remain vigilant and call things what they are. It's a battle for the idea of America and it's just beginning (for President Elect) Obama.
Internet Archive: Archiving Virtual Worlds
The Virtual Worlds video archive is dedicated to the academic investigation and historical preservation of documentation of virtual worlds. This collection is a collaborative effort of the How They Got Game Project of the Stanford Humanities lab, as part of the Preserving Virtual Words project funded by the National Digital Information Infrastructure Preservation Program (NDIIPP) funded by the U.S. Library of Congress. Groups at the University of Illinois, University of Maryland, and Rochester Institute of Technology are also partners in this important project.
